Travelling and moving to new places is exciting, isn’t it! I always thought so.
At some point though, there are a few hurdles to get over before the new place starts feeling like home.
My name is Marie. I am Swedish and I came to Denmark in 1995. That is a bit like moving next door, you might think. But no, it really is not. Before coming here, I lived in three other countries apart from Sweden. In my experience, settling in someplace new, will inevitably require adjustments. Whether you move to a new town or a new continent.
Although, Sweden and Denmark are both culturally and geographically close, there are differences. The language, history and people are similar, but (definitely) not the same. Humor is different, socializing is different, workstyle is different, fashion is different, relationships are different.
I could go on.
Wherever you are from, if you feel both excited and overwhelmed by your new life – that is perfectly normal. We each manage change in our own individual way. Starting out in a new place requires a lot of energy, getting to know new people and familiarizing yourself with the new surroundings. All the while, feelings of isolation, worries or anxiety often lurk in the background, ready to pounce, the moment enthusiasm is replaced by exhaustion and longing for home.
This is where support from a therapist can make all the difference. Therapy creates a safe space for you to put words on your thoughts, feelings and fears. As a professional therapist, I can help you find new perspectives, insights and alternative course of actions, to renew your energy.
Therapy is helpful for people of all ages. Have you brought a spouse and children with you, they too need to adjust to this new life, and being able to talk to someone outside the family unit can ease this transition immensely. This is where I come in. Let me help you manage the emotional and psychological biproducts of change.
So, who am I then? I am a trained psychotherapist, life- and stress coach, certified from recognized institutions here in Denmark. I have always known that I wanted to work with people.
The opportunity presented itself a few years ago, and after 20 years in the IT-business, I started up as a therapist and coach.
I am also a wife and mother, a dog owner and bird-nerd. It took a while for me to settle in here, and I would definitely have benefited from having someone to talk to, about all the craziness changing countries involve. I am happy to offer you that support, which will let you settle in that little bit easier and perhaps, keep you here longer.
